Due to new US federal safety laws coming into action in 1968, Jaguar was forced to alter the Series 1 E-Type for its final production year. The alterations for US-market cars included: open headlights, black rocker switches, relocation of the start-key slot, black and silver ribbed cam-covers, twin cooling fans, and adjustable seats with headrests. These final Series 1 cars were unofficially named “Series 1½”.
Being a rarer UK-supplied car, this Series 1½ retains the preferred: toggle switches, start button, non-headrest seats, and the more powerful three SU carburettor set-up. Originally supplied to KG Hedges Esq. of Bromley, Kent; the E-Type has resided in Kent for the entirety of its life. The current owner purchased the car in 2004 and holds the MOT history back to 1975 as well as the Jaguar Heritage Certificate, which states the car is finished in its original colour of Old English White with black interior and black hood.
Over the winter of 2014/2015, E-Type UK carried out a major overhaul on the car, with an invoice totalling over £20,000. This ensured the car was mechanically perfect by rebuilding all suspension and brakes, upgrading to electronic ignition and fuel pump. We also addressed some of the bodywork including new sills and floors, the full detailed invoice is available upon request.
This very original car has been Waxoyled and undersealed and is ready to be used properly in the British Summertime, come rain or sunshine. Being a more sought-after UK-supplied car with matching numbers, this E-Type also represents a great investment that will continue to bring enjoyment.
