Fiat 500D ‘Trasformabile’ Classic / 1964 / LHD Italy / New 650cc Motor & Syncro Box - Front Disc Brake Conversion / Exceptional Example! £15,995.
This splendid example is the highly desirable ‘D’ model (the most sort after & collectable model in the classic Nuova 500 range) has the very rare ‘suicide doors’, a full length convertible sunshine roof - ‘trasformabile’, ‘round speedo’ - In fact it has it all!
Having previously imported this stunning example & sold it to its first UK owner in July 2015, he decided he wanted a little more grunt & to be able to use the car with ease on motorways & in modern traffic conditions. So in May 2016 we did a full mechanical upgrade by fitting a new 650cc motor, new syncro box & a front disc brake conversion, so it could handle all this new found power! We retained the original matching numbers motor & original crash box, which will come with the car should the new owner require. In fact we agreed to wait to collect this little gem until he had completed the London to Brighton classic car run this summer – I’m glad to say it made it in one piece & was no doubt the quickest 500 participating!
It’s an original Italian LHD Trasformabile & built on 1st April 1964 & was resident in Poggio Renatico which is a commune in the Province of Ferrara in the Italian region Emilia-Romagna located about 30KM’s northeast of Bologna.
Giorgio its long term Italian Policeman owner completed its restoration in circa 2010 at his local Italian sports car specialist. It is absolutely fantastic & a testament to the quality & attention to detail on what appears a no expense spared basis.
We are told Giorgio spent over 8,000 Euros on the work (not including the vehicle in the first place).
He entrusted this vehicle to the specialist whom embarked on a light restoration to a high standard completing in 2010 under his watchful eye. Basically most items were reconditioned or replaced correctly. So in brief: Complete strip to shell. The engine was rebuilt and the gear box overhauled. The handbrake cable was changed, clutch replaced, all pedals changed, the petrol tank was fully refurbished and flushed. The interior was also fully and expertly retrimmed in tan / cream along with the complete door card set & all interior trim was renewed. Most other items of interior trim were refurbished or replaced. All lights were overhauled & the correct aluminium surrounds were machine polished, all rubber items were replaced including the door seals, window & side window seals, new bushes fitted, new struts, complete brake system overhaul, new starter motor and a new exhaust, in fact every mechanical item was either refurbished or replaced.
The bumpers & brackets were replaced, the original steel wheels were fully shot blasted & refurbished. The car was fully painted at this time in the original period shade of Fiat Aquamarine (Light green) that you see today. The underside was treated to a sensible coat of underseal, which should last for another 53 years. In fact it looks as good underneath as it does on the top.
This is one of the best & correctly restored 500D’s we have offered & as good as my own example. Giorgio was a 500 enthusiast & his knowledge & understanding of the correct parts & original detailing is exceptional. It took us a while to acquire this vehicle for the correct price, but it was well worth the wait!
In June 2015 once in our possession, we were meticulous in our preparation prior to offering this exceptional example to the first UK owner by undertaking the following works: We fitted 4 new premium tyres with new white wall spats, 4 new inner tubes & 4 new hub caps, nuts & washers. Removed, flushed the fuel tank. Fitted a new battery, made & fitted a full new sunshine roof in grey premium mohair. Fitted a new exhaust system, brackets & gaskets. Fitted the correct D engine decal set, spare tyre strap, rear seat strap, engine cover plate, 2 chrome wing mirrors, sun visors, ash tray, washer bag, heat shield pad, adjusted the steering geometry, supplied a fresh MOT and conducted a multipoint check, replaced the fuel with £25 of new super unleaded, tuned the carb, set the timing, fitted a premium coil, adjusted & cleaned the brakes & given the cheeky little chap a full service (plugs, fuel filter, air filter etc) just to be sure! Fitted a new boot mat & 500 Key ring. ACI club sticker. The car is on the button & ready to go & show or just enjoy…
This beautiful example was eminently usable as it had its original matching numbers rebuilt Fiat 499cc engine with original gearbox, which still come with the car, but in May 2016 the following upgrades were fitted: 650cc Recon Engine, Recon Syncro gearbox, clutch kit, starter motor, electronic distributor kit, stabilizer bracket, uprated engine mounting spring, front disc brake conversion, wheel adaptor plates & bolts & other enabling sundries. All parts supplied from Ricambio International Ltd. The car was also MOT’d & tested at this time with a spend of over £4,500 - it certainly drives & as good as it looks!
The vehicle comes with a history file & contains: Copy of original Italian log book, UK V5C, Fresh current UK MOT, past UK MOT’s, Specialist parts invoices from Ricambio International Ltd & maintenance invoices, Club details…
The car is fully UK registered.
The car looks pretty much as new & is no doubt as good as when it left the factory in 1964. It’s probably one of the most driveable examples in Europe for the price asked. It has been correctly restored by people who know the marquee. This is a collector’s opportunity and a superb investment & hence this cheeky has a fresh MOT & is being offered for sale for the second time on our shores.

These models are ever increasing in value & are a great investment. Our Fiats come recommended by a leading authority on Fiats & parts specialists – Ricambio International Ltd. I actually have a light blue 1965 500D that makes up part of my own private collection & every body loves it! As we are a Mercedes Pagoda and R107 specialist we are always happy to part exchange one of these type of cars or indeed any classic car of excellent quality, so please don’t miss this most fastidious example of the iconic Fiat 500D. This vehicle is exceptional value, try & find another as original & tax exempt – Please remember ‘you get what you pay for’. Our cars are hand picked by a marquee expert & we turn down 8 or 9 out of every 10 cars offered. The cars we sell, are we believe the best of their type & are here to be viewed & driven in the UK. This takes the gamble out of buying a car direct from Europe sight unseen. Our stock comes fully de-registered from the country of origin with the ACI fee paid, UK MOT’d, test driven, serviced & detailed. Don’t confuse them with other cars on the internet which have had dubious restorations & are offered with a low asking price. We have had 2 clients bring such cars to us recently bought direct from Italy & both were severe MOT failures with a list of faults ranging from no reverse gear to an undercarriage that requires total replacement. You have been warned! There is always a reason why a car is being sold cheaply! Again ‘you get what you pay for’…
This vehicle is we believe the best in Europe don’t settle and ensure you view this stunning example…
