1965 TRABANT P601 EASY RESTORATION RARE EARLY CAR SOLD

There are lots of Trabant projects out there: most date from the 1980s with ugly girder bumpers and potentially tricky issues with registration, emissions legislation, road tax to pay etc etc.
A few date from the 1970s with curly bumpers and maybe a few of those might be tax exempt now.
Almost none date from the 1960s, let alone the first full year of production, 1965!
If you want a true CLASSIC TAX EXEMPT (and soon to be MoT EXEMPT too!) Trabant P601, look no further. Very early cars like this are going to be seriously collectable in future, because they are extremely rare now - try to find another! And if you do, check the chassis number - some are advertised and even registered as 1965 when they actually date from much later...
At 52 years old, it reminds us just how advanced the Trabi was for its time, with transverse engine, front-wheel drive, all-synchro 4-speed gearbox with freewheel on top, all-independent suspension, recycled environmentally-friendly body skin panels (made with resin-impregnated cotton and wool fibres, waste from the clothing industry) over a strong steel skeleton frame, and comfortable seating for four with a decent-sized boot. And at the time when British two-strokes were still running 16:1 fuel:oil ratio, Trabis came out with 33:1 and later (as for this engine) went to 50:1. I visited Budapest, Hungary in the 1980s and watched thousands of Trabis commuting in to work - there was no smoke, no smog - only one car I saw, clearly maladjusted, was smoky.
This one is a genuine East German Trabi - the window sticker shows it attended the Dresden Wartburg und Trabant Treffen on August 11-13, 2006. It had clearly remained in regular use much of that time, as it has been usefully upgraded with later, more comfortable seats (while retaining many charming early interior details that you just won't see on later cars); it has been fitted with the later, slightly more powerful engine; it has the later, more effective dual circuit self-adjusting brakes; and it has been upgraded to the later, much more effective, 12 volt electrics (so you can actually see where you're going at night...). All this makes it the ideal, usable early Trabant P601.
It starts, runs and drives, and could probably be made road-legal quite easily. It's not currently registered and there's no paperwork, but that is NOT a problem according to the Owners Club, who are happy to come and inspect the car and confirm its date of manufacture to get an age-related numberplate from DVLA.
There is some rust, in the passenger-side door shell, in the sills, along the bottom of the front panel and in the inner wheelarches. It's not extreme, far from it, but with the intention of doing a proper job I purchased a big tranch of genuine original new old stock Sachsenring Trabant parts from east Germany last year, which will go with the car. As shown, they include a complete brand new passenger door, complete new front panel (double-skinned), upper and lower sill panels, and four full inner wheelarch panels. There's more - I also acquired an early front grille (secondhand) and some other parts. We rebuilt the brakes and had it running last year - since when it has sat in the barn, awaiting further attention. UPDATE - The car is sold in running, driving condition, it starts easily and runs well. I have just driven it five miles - the brakes need attention but the engine, gearbox, clutch, etc are fine. Lack of time and change of priorities mean I could be persuaded to part with it now for significantly less than I've spent on it, as I need the space too...
Forget all those later Trabis out there, grab yourself a classic one now!
Delivery might be possible by arrangement - as you can see I have an ideal Trabi-sized trailer...
