1964 Maserati Mistral. For Sale

Chassis No. 042, making this the 21st Mistral Berlinetta built. Ordered new with all aluminium body and alloy rimmed Borrani wire wheels and finished today in the same extremely rare and striking colour scheme as when it left the Factory in 1964, Oro Andalusia Metallic with Connolly White hides. Also original to the car, the matching numbered 3. 7 litre engine and 5-speed ZF gearbox, still running on its original Lucas fuel injection, and still complete with its original duplicate set of keys.

Supplied new via Hoffman Motors of Los Angeles and first registered on the 11th June 1964. The history of this very early example is exceptionally well documented, from the original Maserati Build Sheet to date, and is contained in three large lever arch and box files.

The car has been in the UK since 1988 and has only had two long term and passionate owners since then, the first for eleven years and the second of those for some eighteen years.

Please make no mistake, this is a superlative example, in terms of both condition and provenance.

MECHANICAL CONDITION.

Judging from both the history file and from examination of the car itself, it is abundantly clear that there has been no expense spared in the continuous maintenance of this motor car. Looked after in this country by respected marque specialists including McGrath Maserati, invoices on file show that works effected most recently include, inter alia, a complete new wiring loom and servicing of the Lucas injection system.

The only significant deviations from Factory specification are the fitment of a complete stainless steel exhaust system by Longlife Stainless Steel Exhausts and the recent fitment (2018) of a Bosch fuel pump system conversion in place of the original and temperamental Lucas.

BODYWORK & PAINTWORK.

An all aluminium bodied example, the car has, over the last couple of years, been the subject of a bare metal repaint in its original Oro Andalusia Metallic.

At the same time, a substantial amount of re-chroming has been carried out and polishing of stainless steel and aluminium trim.

New rubber seals have been fitted and a brand new Triplex Pilkington windscreen installed, in the correct green tint to match the rest of the glass.

WHEELS & TYRES.

Being an early car, the Borrani aluminium road wheels are of the larger and prettier 16” diameter. These have been completely dismantled and rebuilt to exacting standards. For example, the alloy rims were individually stripped by hand to ensure that the aluminium was not damaged and the stamped ‘Ruote Borrani’ script was not lost, as may have resulted from blasting. Then crack tested prior to being wet painted, powder coating producing too heavy and unauthentic a finish, in my opinion.. The centres were re-chromed and new stainless steel spokes fitted. Needless to say, the wheels were then both statically and dynamically balanced.

The same care went into the chroming of the three-eared spinners, thus ensuring that the ‘Borrani’ script was not lost.

Tyres are Avon all round, although the spare has what would have been an original specification Pirelli Cinturato.

INTERIOR / LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT.

With the exception of the immaculate original dashboard, the interior has been completely re-trimmed, again, as with so much else on this car, to the very highest standards:

The headlining is a perfect recreation of the original, from the material itself, to the thickness of the foam backing. A small section of the original headlining has been retained within the files accompanying the car, as testament to this.

The seats embody the overall attention to detail: new leather, naturally, but each seat has been stripped down to its bare bones, and entirely rebuilt with new strapping, webbing, foam cushioning, clips, fixings and other hardware. Thus these seats can be sat in without the sagging so often apparent in other, lesser,‘re-trims’. Once again, a small section of the original leather has been retained on file, showing the accuracy in both colour and grain of the new leather.

As an early car, the instruments are of the prettier Jaeger chrome rimmed design. All work perfectly, the speedometer and tachometer having been overhauled by instrument specialist Speedograph Richfield.

And beneath the boot floor, the complete tool roll and original jack in its separate bag remain in place.
