With the final production run of Porsche’s first water-cooled 911 series (996), Porsche released a very special edition commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 911. 1,963 units were built for the world with about 800 delivered to the U.S. Unlike previous anniversary editions, these examples came with more than just unique cosmetic upgrades. Most important, these cars received the X51 Power Kit option, which was $14,000 on its own. This option included unique sand-cast aluminum intake manifolds (from GT3) with modified cross section and adapted pipes. The exhaust manifold came with a larger cross section and larger headers. The cylinder heads were modified and included unique camshafts. The inlet valve springs came with increased valve stroke. A third radiator was added as well as an additional underside panel. Finally, the oil pan and DME (computer) were modified. Unlike tuners just doing software, this X51 option was a substantial mechanical upgrade. As a result, the power was conservatively increased from 315hp to 345hp. A full list of what makes these limited production 911s unique include:

This example was built in October of 2003 and sold new on February 25th, 2004 by Hoehn Porsche of Carlsbad, California. It spent its entire life in Southern California among enthusiast/PCA owners. It is clear that this 911 was never abused, always garaged, and properly cared-for. We have most service records, which show excellent maintenance history. Most of the services were either performed at the Porsche dealer or Hergesheimer Motorsports in Lake Forest, CA (a highly respected local independent Porsche specialist). Highlights include:

The current local owner is part of a family that has been long-time Porsche enthusiasts. Although he initially started looking for an air-cooled 911, he fell in love with the condition of this example. So, he purchased it less than 8-months ago. First, he had Hergesheimer perform a pre-purchase inspection and they found the car to be in excellent condition. 2-years ago, they noted that there was some slight weeping of oil from the flywheel seal area, but it was not worth doing anything and they would monitor it. The area is frequently inspected and has not changed (see pic) since then. Hergesheimer has found that cars that don’t get driven as much (like this low-mile example) tend to show moisture in this area. It is very normal.

Recently (@44k-miles/6-months ago), the current owner decided to have an oil service done including cutting open the filter and inspection. The filter was clean and no signs of metal debris. Furthermore, the air filter, fuel filter, power steering system, tie rod ends, axle joints, and coolant system were all inspected and found to be in good condition. New spark plugs were installed as well as a Porsche-style sport exhaust modification (stock system with a deeper growl like the sport muffler option).

As you can imagine, this 40-year Edition is in excellent condition. The exterior looks fantastic with minimal signs of use. The front nose and mirrors are covered in clear bra. The paint is mostly original and verified with a paint meter. There is some slight paint blending and clear on the front right fender based on the slightly higher meter readings. However, no signs of damage. The glass is all original including the windshield. All the exterior lights work properly. The 18” wheels are wearing their unique original factory finish and have no curb rash. They are wrapped in older Michelin tires that have no cracks but are at about 1/3-life remaining. The brakes have about 1/2-life remaining.

The interior is equally as nice and looks incredibly fresh. The unique perforated leather seats are in great shape with minimal signs of use. The door panels and carpet look perfect. The alcantera headliner has no stains. The dash has no cracks. There are no strange odors. It is clear that the prior owners all took incredible care of the interior and it looks barely used. All the gauges, buttons, lights, etc. work properly. The A/C system blows cold.

Of course, the best part about this 911 is the way it drives. This is how these cars should have been delivered starting in 1999. The 345hp is a welcome addition and is perfectly suited for the upgraded M030 suspension package. The throttle response is direct and quick thanks to the upgraded factory linkage system. The brakes have excellent bite with no fading. The gearbox shifts butter-smooth with no grinding or slipping. This rare Porsche would be great for anything from weekend touring to even daily use.

California registration is paid through February of 2018.

This 40th Anniversary 911 comes with all the owner’s manuals, the original factory window sticker, most service receipts, an extra key, original spare, factory tool kit, factory custom car cover with carry case, and jack.
