Stunning 1934 Triumph Gloria 6 Cylinder Speed Model 4 Seat SOLD
The Gloria was very distinctive, only by standing alongside one can you realise how breathtakingly low and handsome this car really is. The gloves were off now and with Donald Healey's arrival in 1933 "after winning the Monte Carlo rally" established Triumphs reputation as a builder of fine sporting cars; the Gloria range were announced with the Triumph -made Coventry Climax four, and in this cars case the super slick inlet over exhaust six-cylinder engine breathing through twin horizontal mounted SU carburettors.
Frank Warner's styling was a far cry from TrIumphs more modest compact earlier vehicles.
We now have rakishly longer and some of the best designed cars of the period, comparing and in many ways better looking than the competition- Riley SS, Alivis just to name a few.
The Gloria chassis incorporated conventional - leaf springs at each corner, underslung at the rear with a cross-braced cruciform framework dipping to allow the low-profile styling.
Interestingly this remained a detail of Triumph styling right through to the post war 1800/ 2000 Triumph Roadsters that normally dominate my line up.
Possibly from his rally experience Healey added the built- in lifting jacks/ incorporated a full set of instruments including a rev-counter: and free-wheeling to allow the sporting aspect of the four-speed gearbox with remote control gear lever, and 12v electrics.
Stopping power was provided by the massive Lockheed hydraulic 12in drums / another first for Triumph and still highly envied by other pre-war owners to this day.
A problem so often encountered with cars from this period is the lack of space behind the steering wheel, so I'm pleased to report on this occasion you "won't" have to go on a diet of soup and distilled water in order to squeeze inside the cockpit? and you have the added benefit of being able to carry two occupants with legs intact in the rear.
A truly sporting stance is provided by a full fold flat windscreen, this really emphasises that gorgeous long bonnet and combined with Triumphs very clever fold down 'cut away' profile doors, that swung down on the inside or erected for weather protection. The car also comes with full weather equipment in black mohair (hood and side screens and a matching tonneau cover.
This Gloria Six Four Seater Speed Model Tourer is just one of a mere seven produced in this specification, of which only two survivors are know to exist. A penultimate owner for 34 years, this car has received a superb total nut and bolt restoration by marque specialist to a very high standard. Indeed to purchase and restore to this standard today would easily double the very competitive asking price assuming you could find one that is.
Car comes with a huge history file, contains sundry restoration invoices, full Mot, V5 Registration Certificate, an original owners and parts manual, plus a delightful selection of black and white photographs of the car in the early years.
A wonderful opportunity to acquire a pre-war six -cylinder tourer in outstanding Show condition, eligible for a host of VSCC and Pre- 1940 events. Debit/ Credit/ Cards/ Taken (Delivery Service Available)"See website - details above for better photos"
